How to Safely Warm Your Home This Winter

    Winter
When the long summer days begin to cool, you need to begin thinking about how you heat your home. The cold weather months can be a dangerous time if you do not use safety measures to heat your home. Here are some safety tips you can employ to ensure you heat your home safely this winter season.

    Test the Heating System Early

One thing you need to do is turn the heater on ahead of the cold weather to make sure it is operational. The last thing you want is to turn on the heat on a freezing morning only for it to not work. Plus, turning on a heating system for the first time in a cold house can put a lot of unneeded pressure on the system.

You may notice some things about your heating system when you first turn it on, most notably the smell. If you smell a burning smell when you initially turn the heat on, do not worry. After months of sitting dormant, it is natural for the heating element to get dusty. The dust will burn off when you turn the heat on and eventually subside.

If you notice a strong burning smell that does not go away, or if you see any smoke or vibrations, turn the heat off right away. You likely have a serious problem that will require professional attention before you can use the heat for the winter.

    Schedule a Maintenance Check

A solid maintenance check of your heating system is a good thing to do before the weather gets too cold. You may have some underlying issues you are not aware of, many of which could be dangerous. Small problems can eventually grow larger, and you do not want to encounter a heating failure on a cold day.

Generally, you should have your entire HVAC system inspected at least one time a year. However, the beginning of the warm and cold weather seasons is ideal for biannual maintenance checks. The technician will look at your entire system and make sure everything is ready for the hot or cold season ahead.

    Be Careful With Space Heaters

Some homeowners add space heaters to their home in addition to a HVAC heating system to help elevate the heat without adding additional energy expense. Space heaters are also useful in rooms that have a more difficult time holding warmth. Space heaters should not, however, be your only heat source.

If not used appropriately, a space heater can be dangerous. You should always monitor the use of a space heater, so never use them when you are asleep or away from your home. Also, keep space heaters away from curtains, blankets, or anything else that can catch on fire.

    Check Your Carbon Monoxide Detector

Carbon monoxide poisoning is a significant danger in the winter months. Without a fully functioning carbon dioxide monitor, you are at risk since there are no fumes or other identifiable properties.

An issue arises when your heating system does not vent properly. An improper ventilation system means your home can easily fill with carbon monoxide without you knowing. Before you turn your heating system on for the first time, change the batteries in the carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home and check to make sure they work as they should.
